The STEAM Boat's Student Interview Series, or SIS for short, gives students a chance to shine. We're taking interviews with various students who have showcased an interest in STEAM and leadership through exceptional means! Showcasing not only their amazing work but showcasing the person behind it. These interviews feature a Q&A style video allowing you to learn more about the student and their work. Sanjana Prabhu is a sophomore at Troy High School. She is an ambitious student and hopes to pursue medicine in the future. With her amazing grades and extracurriculars, she is able to share insight for future students pursuing STEM fields.
In this interview, Ashi shares insight on her academic journey which has influenced her journey into discovering STEM careers. She talks about her passion for helping the community. Ashi also shares great insight on her challenges in competitions at the highest levels.
Introducing Arya Upadhyay: Arya is someone who is constantly searching for ways to bring positive change in her community. She has taken her passion for climate change, programming, and robotics to create an organization of over 40 people worldwide to bring change to her community. In this interview, Arya talks about her club Plant A Change. She talks about her biodegradable robot and how it helped her community. Additionally, she gives advice to other high school students about the steps they should take.
Introducing Sofia Johnston! Sofia is a 20-year-old biology student at Mount San Antonio College. She is very passionate about science research, specifically neuroscience and Alzheimer’s Disease. In this interview, Sofia provides insight into her research journey and how other students can get involved as well. She shares different strategies to gain lab and research experience as well.
Introducing Samiskha Saravanarn! Samiksha is an accomplished junior from Troy, Michigan and a standout in the vibrant STEM community. Over her three years in high school, Samiksha has embarked on an intellectually demanding journey, honing in on rigorous STEM classes with a focus on science. In this engaging interview, she takes us through the intricacies of her academic pursuits, unraveling the strategies that have fueled her journey of sustained excellence. She has also been a leader at her school and is also part of a research program called BioBuilders. We talked about her time management skills with her busy schedule and her advice to students with hectic schedules like hers. She also went in depth about her research program and what she’s learnt from it. She shared insight about what to do to excel in school and follow your passion.
Sarah is a curious individual who has a passion for anything to do with the environment. She talks about her experiences working on a project that focuses on recycling waste materials. This project had a deep impact on her and has changed the way she views the environment around her. Sarah is also passionate about uplifting other young women. She believes that young women should focus on figuring our their dreams and passions and create a plan to achieve them.
Avika Gera is a motivated sophomore who is highly interested in STEM and is very passionate about a club she has started that aims to provide STEAM resources to underprivileged individuals.. She is able to share insight on the challenges she faced when starting her own club and the importance of participating in diverse activities.
Anika is a passionate student in who loves STEM and is part of various organizations and has many leadership roles within them. She has founded her own club through which she hopes to end STEM disparities and make STEM accessible to all. She hopes one day to work in the field of technology and medicine.
Hassini is currently a high school junior and is an avid mental health and suicide prevention advocate. She hosts a podcast titled "Each Voice" focused on uplifting voices in psychology and mental health. Hassini tells us about her journey in the Mental Health field, she provides very helpful tips on how to start your own podcast and gain listeners. She is an active member of her society and is an extremely passionate person.
Maycee Taylor is a dedicated student who works to help animals in Cabarrus County through her organization Helping Cabarrus County’s Animals. She manages drives and fundraisers to aid shelters in the community.
Jordan Smith is an environmental advocate who has founded a student run environmental organization. Jordan, driven by her profound love for the planet, hopes to contribute valuable insights to inspire change for a more educated, sustainable future. Jordan tells shares her journey into the environmental field. She provides insight on how to start an organization and tips and tricks on managing such a large team.
Esha Sehgal is a dedicated advocate for closing the gender gap in STEM, particularly in computer science. She actively encourages women to pursue careers in STEM fields and serves as a leader in this effort, driving change to create a more inclusive environment. Esha tells us about her journey towards staring her own non-for profit called CodeHerWorld. This non-for profit encourages women to pursue the field of Computer Science. Esha shares tips and suggestions of how to grow and establish a non-profit. She shares about her journey into coding, the resources she used, camps she attended etc.
Hanni Yang is a senior majoring in public health and biology. Beyond academics, Hanni takes an active leadership role as the President of the Writing and Environmental Clubs. She also serves as the Magazine Branch Director at ScienceHolic, where she combines her love for science with effective communication. Hanni provides very helpful tips on how to find, apply, and take online courses/internships. Hanni also talks about her journey toward leadership in her in-school clubs and outside organizations.
Sri Tharika Jothipuram Jayakumar is a senior from the United States. She is the founder of Med2Day, a youth organization that aspires to inspire and educate the medical leaders of tomorrow. Apart from Med2Day, she is also the president of GIDAS, the Biology club, and The Indian Student Association at school.
Joyce is a current freshman at Cornell, majoring in Human Biology, Health, and Society and minoring in Global Health. She is the co-founder of ScienceHolic, a non-profit organization that aims to introduce intricate scientific concepts in a manner that is fun and comprehensible to teens. In this interview Joyce talks about her journey in STEM and how she founded an amazing organization. Joyce also talks about her path into Cornell and her journey in Pre-Med.
Ayanna is a sophomore from the United States. From a young age, she has expressed interest in joining the computer science workforce. Additionally, Ayanna is passionate about female involvement in the STEAM field. Thus, she is a dedicated member of various Women in STEM organizations and denominations. In this interview, she talks about projects she's made, her STEM achievements, and STEM related organizations she is part of. She also provides some amazing insight on solving STEM disparitiy issues, like the gender gap and financial inequality.
